Should Christians be participating in Hallowe'en?

By: Mary Lester

Hallowe'en was not a huge phenomenon in the UK when I was a child about 30 years ago. However every year this event has become bigger and bigger to the point that every television programme is involved, and every shop full of decorations. What then are we as Christian parents to tell our children; is it after all “harmless fun” or is it something more sinister?

Those who would argue that hallowe'en is a bit of harmless fun, would probably argue that in Christ we are free, and that we are merely enjoying a secular occasion. It is important to be aware that pagans and satanists celebrate this day and we have been instructed not to participate in the sacrifices of demons (1 Corinthians 10: 20) whether or not we believe there is anything to it.

1 Corinthians 10:23 - “everything is permissable, but not everything is beneficial” and v 31 “doing everything to the glory of God” are surely incompatible with celebrating such a day. We are instructed as Christians to not conform to the pattern of this world (Romans 12:2) however we should also be accepting of those whose faith is weak or who have not been informed, (Romans 14:1) and not judge them for participating in “disputable matters”.

Hallowe'en may look on the outside like harmless fun, but it is worth bearing in mind that the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. He does not play games, and any child who plays with fire gets burned. Our job as believers is to help our Lord shepherd them away from this dangerous preoccupation and we should therefore not be critiscising those who participate , but providing a viable alternative. So what is the church going to do? Church leaders, elders, pastors, vicars, parents, youth leaders, it is surely time to act, and provide a real alternative for our young people.
